My G-Con '98 Report
Man oh man, did I have a fun weekend. I don't even know where to begin.
Friday, Emma, Mike, Corey, Artuz, and yours truly left good old Motown behind for Chicago. We all went in Artuz's parents' mini-van. We got along better than I thought we would, which is good. Anyway, friday night we went out to eat, and then went to the movies and saw Peter Jackson's "Bad Taste." I love that movie. But on to the big day, Saturday...
We drove out to Arlington Heights (we were staying at friends' house) and excitedly went in to the Radisson. All of us just kind of ignored everything else at first, and went straight for the dealer's room. Ah... heaven. Other than the slight disappointment that no one brought any Medicom figures to sell, I couldn't ask for anything more. Mike got a great big Gamera that I am so jealous of. Artuz bought, among other things, these two giant banks, one of Godzilla, and the other Ghidorah. Both are super deformed, and were quite a steal. Emma went with the home decor theme (Godzilla soap dish, toothbrush holder, and hand soap dispenser), and also got this kick ass Ultraman watch. Corey raided the ten dollar box of Ultraman villians, and came out with lots of good ones.
Me, well here's my final damage.
- Unopened box of Kikaider trading cards (I ended getting the whole set!)
- Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla movie poster
- Super deformed Godzilla bank (about eight inches tall)
- Kamen Rider and Kamen Rider V3 five inch statues
- Godzilla dressed as mascot of Tokyo Yomiuri Giants (four inches tall)
- Gamera vinyl figure from Gamera2
- Toho Kong vinyl figure
- Jet Jaguar vinyl figure
- Ultraman poster
- Kamen Rider super deformed four inch figures (V3, Black, and Sky)
- Kamen Rider trading cards
- Tokyo Yomiuri Giants beach towel
- Three lame-ass (I mean that in the best possible way) Ultraman villain vinyl figures
- Big furry Mothra with stand (from Godzilla vs. Mothra)
- Small Toei figure collection (including Kikaider and Transforming Ninja Arashi)
- Ultraman Dyna Volumes 1 and 2
- Godzilla vinyl figure from G vs. Destroyah
- Godzilla vs Destroyah soundtrack cd
- Many assorted keychains
Sheesh, that's a lot of stuff. Suffice to say, we all left exhausted, and quite happy. Later that night, some of us (including myself), went to Comisky Park to see the White Sox take on my beloved Detroit Tigers. We lost, and that's ok, but man did that ballpark suck. I didn't like the feel of the stadium, plus their hot dogs and sausages were terrible.
Sunday, before we left, we went to Chicago's china town. It was real nice. I bought two Faye Wong double cd's and this really cool Ultraman alarm clock. By this time, my money was just about gone, so it was probably a good idea that we were leaving.
Much love to my travel-mates. I can't wait to go back next year.
Quote of the weekend:
"I'm not in the band, but I've jammed with them a few times."
You had to be there.
